Contractor Definitions + Builder New Construction The definition for these contractors is in their name, they build most from out of the ground and up some will build residential and/or commercial. Some will be developers. They may hold a license in several state and they will/should have all local and state license and insurance necessary to perform all contracted duties Consultant A professional who provides advice in a particular area of expertise. These are the contractors you can contact when needing advice about a future project, need an objective project assessment or in need of an independent professional opinion about an ongoing project. Construction consultants include experts in the residential and/or commercial fields, such as building green, construction estimating and cost management, construction management, construction claims management, environment matters, engineering, general home improvements, remodeling, new construction, sound system design,... General Contractor These contractors will/should have all local and state license and insurance necessary to perform all duties contracted. They build your homes from the ground up, your additions and deal with the headaches that come with scheduling subcontractors, weather delays, building inspectors, paying all subcontractors/employees and the many more issues that will/may arise. Green Contractor These contractor are educated on the best way to build and remodel your home, creating a healthier living environment, energy and resource efficient for your business or home by using the most environmentally friendly products and services available. Handyman These guys/companies do everything from small general repairs, "honey do list" to change a light bulb. Insurance Claims Contractor These contractors are familiar with handling Insurance claims and dealing with the insurance companies direct so you don't have to. These contractors/companies will do the actual rebuild or repair of your property. Service Company Any company that offers a schedule maintenance service or a non home-improvement related service. Examples of some of these different type of service companies: alarm companies, dumpster, home inspectors, maid service, rental companies, moving companies, pest control and portable restrooms just to name a few. Specialty Contractor These companies will/should be Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certified Companies, e.g. lead paint, asbestos, radon in short any company or contractor certified to handle hazardous or toxic building materials.
