What type of contractor am I?

FYI:
Many contractors may/will be listed by two or more definitions based on their licensing, certification, training and divisions of their companies.
We use the most common general descriptions used to describe contractors in various areas, states and cities.

Builder New Construction

The definition for these contractors is in their name, they build most from out of the ground and up some will build residential and/or commercial. Some will be developers.

They may hold a license in several state and they will/should have all local and state license and insurance necessary to perform all contracted duties

Contractor

The definition of Contractor is a general term for all contracting companies, construction companies and individuals performing various services.

Some services or terms may include home improvement, remodeling, additions, kitchen and bath remodeling, home repair, concrete, framing, plumbing, electrical, insulation, drywall, painting, carpentry, flooring, landscaping, cleaning and the many other trades and companies committed to the residential and commercial industry.

Consultant

A professional who provides advice in a particular area of expertise.

These are the contractors you can contact when needing advice about a future project, need an objective project assessment or in need of an independent professional opinion about an ongoing project.

Construction consultants include experts in the residential and/or commercial fields, such as building green, construction estimating and cost management, construction management, construction claims management, environment matters, engineering, general home improvements, remodeling, new construction, sound system design,...

General Contractor

These contractors will/should have all local and state license and insurance necessary to perform all duties contracted.

They build your homes from the ground up, your additions and deal with the headaches that come with scheduling subcontractors, weather delays, building inspectors, paying all subcontractors/employees and the many more issues that will/may arise.

Green Contractor

These contractor are educated on the best way to build and remodel your home, creating a healthier living environment, energy and resource efficient for your business or home by using the most environmentally friendly products and services available.

Handyman

These guys/companies do everything from small general repairs, "honey do list" to change a light bulb.

Insurance Claims Contractor

These contractors are familiar with handling Insurance claims and dealing with the insurance companies direct so you don't have to.

These contractors/companies will do the actual rebuild or repair of your property.

Service Company

Examples of different type of service companies: alarm companies, architects, dumpster, engineers, home inspectors, interior designers or decorators, maid service, rental companies, moving companies, pest control and portable restrooms just to name a few. These type of service companies would be found under Find a Contractor - type of contractor - Service Company.

All service companies should register as a contractor or supplier and when asked "what type of contractor are you" select service company.

Other examples of different type of service companies: dumpster companies, portable restrooms and temporary fencing. These type of service companies could be found in both Find a Contractor or Find a Supplier.

For services that we viewed as difficult to decide the best listing tool we have, added to the search results the term See/Search Find a Contractor Also or See/Search Find a Supplier Also.

Searching for a Service Company | How Service Companies should decide what tools is the best place for them.

Our general rule of thought is:

When searching for a service company, if the service offered or needed deals with the home, house or building directly, and a homeowner or residential contractor can do business with or benefit from directly, then the service company should register as a contractor and therefore found under Find a Contractor - type of contractor - service company. If this describes your service, you would register as a contractor in contractor tools.

When searching for a service company, if the service benefits a commercial company, Industrial or Government institution directly or requires a commercial contractor before benefit, then the service company should be listed as a supplier and therefore found under Find a Supplier. If this describes your service, you would register as a supplier in supplier tools.

For the most part all service companies will be found under Find a Contractor - type of contractor - Service Company.
The distinction between residential and commercial will be defined during registration.

Specialty Contractor

These companies will/should be fully insured in/for their field of expertise.

They will specialize in a variety of areas from mold removal, fire and water damage restoration, pest control, engineering contractors.

Most will have gone through some type of schooling and be certified in their field of expertise.

Weekend Warriors

These are individuals who may work for other companies during the week but look for very small projects to work on and complete in one day or weekend to earn extra money.

They may have limited tools and knowledge of some projects/trades...

Remember they do these projects in there spare time and their time maybe limited.

Most will not have insurance.

Top
